Button opening hands - beginner Heads up poker requires us to play many hands. We want to be stealing the blinds more often than in any other form of poker. Against an unknown opponent we should be opening 100% of the hands we have when in position (on the button).
We can double the blinds to achieve this or 2.25x when opening. We can keep it so small as we do it so frequently. On the button holding 10 3 seems like a fold, but we should open this hand. We open as the big blind is BLIND. They are just as likely to have a none playable hand, even some of the close to playable hands can be folded as they dont want to play out of position with it so we can win another pre flop pot by just putting pressure on these hands.
Always remember both players post blinds before seeing their hole cards, so strong hands are harder to come by and less frequent. When in position we need to keep stealing these more often than our opponent is. We also need to get value for our hands and stay balanced. So opening AA the same as we would open 72. Min raising or 2.25xing constantly will allow us never to be readable by our opponent.
We should also never limp the button until we might have to. Opening the same size constantly will make us the most money. We can adjust out button opening ranges in the next lesson when our opponent starts to play back at us. For now though open every button.
