The early stages of a tourney is when stack sizes are deep compared to the big blind and the cost of playing an orbit is low. At this stage of the tourney we can sit back and wait for good hands to stack our more impatient opponents. Remember the blinds are very small at this stage of a tourney and are not really worth battling over yet. Because we have the luxary of time in the early stages we dont want to be playing marginal hands and instead wait for top tier hands like:
AA Kk qq jj AK
As long as its not too costly we can speculate with mid to low pocket pairs and attempt to flop a set and stack our opponents. Post flop we should be looking to be getting all our ships in with top pair/top kicker or better and huge combo-draws (when we have fold equity). The main goal in the early stages is to win a couple of giant pots and not give much away in between, we should definately avoid playing marginal hands here and protect our stack.
