Flat payouts

There are two basic types of payout structures for poker tournaments. One is called Top Heavy and the other is called Flat. In a flat payout tournament, the prize money is awarded in a more evenly manner as compared to a Top Heavy tournament where the winner (and the top five players after the winner) get the majority of the prize money.

With a top heavy structure the winner may walk away with as much as 40-45 percent of the prize money. With a flat structure, the winner may only get 12-15 percent of the prize money, but many other players will be able to cash in with at least some winnings.
