Button, defending-ranges

Posted 7 years agoEdited 7 years ago

Hi.

Can you help me to create defending-ranges from the button vs 3bet from SB or BB.
At the moment I use the ranges below as standard when i defend the button vs 3bet from SB or BB.
I usually openraise with the sizing 2.2BB from the button and use these ranges if I face a 3bet around 9BB (4 times my OR)

4-bet and jam vs 5-bet:
AA-QQ
AKs, AKo

4-bet and fold vs 5-bet:
A9s-A6s, ATo
K9s-K6s, KJo
Q9s-Q8s

Call:
77-JJ
AQs-ATs, AQo-AJo
KQs-KTs, KQo
QJs-QTs
JTs-J9s
T9s, 98s

I have some question about this.
1. What do you think of my standardrange vs 3-bet?
2. How do you change these ranges if villain 3-bets often, and what is often?
3. How do you change these ranges if villain 3-bets rarely, and what is rarely?

4. What range should I defend if villain 3-bets me with the sizing 3x (around 6BB)
5. What range should I defend if villain 3-bets me with the sizing 5x or more?

6. Should I sometimes jam AKs and AKo when I get 3-bet, when and why?
7. Is there any other hands that I should jam with when i face a 3-bet, when and why?
8. What stats are important regarding postflop-play when deciding what range you should defend?
9. Do you change much of these ranges vs nits, whales, regs etc.?
10. Do you increase your opening-sizing vs different player-types, when?
11. I usually 4-bet with the sizing 2,2x when I get 3-bet. Should I sometimes go bigger, when?

12. I play NL25-zoom at Pokerstars where the players are pretty tough (my opinion), so I guess these ranges should change when I play softer games,
what do you think about that? Also I want to know what you think about higher stakes, should these ranges change much when you play higher limits?

If I have missed something about this, let me know. I want to know everything about your thought-process regarding defending button vs 3-bets.

Thanks //Danwan

Hi Danwan,

I'm no expert at these things, but I'll try to help. First of all, how wide do you open from BTN? If you open around 50%, you're not defending nearly enough as you should, as you defend approx. 15% of hands. I imagine your ft3b is close to 70%

I'd also 4b-call JJ.
4b-folds I don't like, most of these hands are strong enough to just flat a 3bet. For 4b-fold I usually use K8s-K2s, ATo, and sometimes KJo.
I'd flat a 3bet with any Axs (except AKs), 22-TT, AJo, AQo, KQo, most suited connectors, some suited gappers like T8s+, Q9s+, K9s+.

I'll try to also answer some of your questions

1. Too tight
2. Openraise tighter range, fold less to 3bets, I think 15%+ 3bet is quite loose
3. Openraise wider, fold more to 3bets, below 10% I'd say is quite tight
4. Defend more, mostly by flatting
5. Very tight range, avoid flatting a lot, I'd mostly defend by 4betting - for these questions there is no specific range you should defend, you should always adjust to your opponents Smile

6. I don't think so, maybe if villian is a mega whale who will call a jam with AJo or something like that, but usually never
7. Not really
8. Villian's postflop AF, cbet% in 3b pots, x/f flop as PFR in 3b pots, x/f turn after flop cbet in 3b pots, WTSD... fold to flop raise in 3b pots
9. Of course, you want to defend a lot tighter vs nit than vs aggro reg
10. I usually 2.5x from BTN and open bigger only if there's a whale in BB/SB
11. My default 4b sizing is 2x+2bb IP, 2x+4bb OOP. You can 4b a bit bigger if his 3bet is small, and 4b to like 2x if his 3b is big

Hope some of this helps, I'm sure some pros will give their advice Smile

P.S. Don't play zoom Smile At least switch to reg tables, but I'd suggest you to switch sites

I don't get it why you should 4bet on bu with Ace 6-9s, what if you're on blindlevel 2k/4k ?
So if IR to 8k, player who 3bet to 22k, you 4bet to 44k? Or am I doing something wrong here?

Hi @Danwan Here are my BTN vs 3 bet ranges.

It's important to realise that you don't have to stick to it rigidly. Such as JJ being a 4 bet isn't going to be great in a 5NL full ring game, but much better at your stakes.

Thank you Turlock and Kasa.
It works a little better for me now when I followed your tips.

The best tip was probably, don´t play zoom at pokerstars!!
I tried Snap poker at 888Poker and it is so much softer.

Turlock, how do you get this Link to work, see below and how did you do it?

Is it possible to "call" someone to a thread by posting his/her name like that?

If I want the guys below to respond to my thread, how do I get them to do so?
