How long have you been playing poker?

Posted 7 years ago

Just thought I would ask this as there is a such a huge range of players here and it would be interesting to know!

Also, if you could go back and give yourself one bit of advice when you first started playing poker, what would it be?

10 years for me! Pretty much started as soon as I turned 18 and played professionally until I was 27.

10 years and 10 million hands later - and I still don't have a WSOP bracelet Smile

Got some good RB THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Cash

11 years, and it's been a rough journey with plenty of tough times over the years. Took me from 2005 until 2008 to become a winning player after moving to cash games, even in those glory days of super soft games. Two years later at the end of 2010 I finally quit my job to play full time, and moved to Thailand.

As for advice, I would say to concentrate on one single game/format until you're at least a decent confirmed winner. The other thing I underestimated a lot was how important the mental game is for your results. When everything in your life is going well and you're mentally in a good place it doesn't matter so much, but things can spiral out of control during the tough times taking your win rate with it. I'm speaking from experience after a couple of really rough runs where I struggled to accept my preparation was the reason for my downfall.

I have just started getting into gambling and trying to understand the online casino landscape and what type of online casinos there are. I wanted to know if you could recommend me any good online casino to play slots.

Damn, you're making me feel so old. I can vividly remember March of 2008 and my incredible frustration after missing a day two in a... Magic: the Gathering Grand Prix in Vienna of all things (I lost the final game of the day and this was my first 'big tournament' away from home so the experience was pretty traumatic at the time). Shortly after that soul-crushing moment, I decided to hit up my buddy who got me into Magic in the first place because I've heard he switch to a slightly more mature card game... and the rest is history. While this wasn't my first introduction to poker (I played some hold'em and five card draw kitchen table games with friends before that) at that moment I was somewhat determined to take it seriously so I guess my 'real' introduction to the game happen just shy of 8 and a half years ago.

Question is - how much longer do you want to play for?
Posted 7 years ago
Been playing card games for money since I was a toddler. Poker specifically since about 15 years old and playing on my Dads' Ladbrokes account. Been taking it seriously for about 18 months with some half decent results

I don't think I've actually played poker yet, but I've been clicking buttons for, oh, 6 or 7 yrs now.

Advice to self: work smarter this time.

2 years (such a newb!). Deposited £10 on Stars, played a £1 SNG, won it, was hooked. First few months was spent messing around with SNG's, steadily losing. Switched to cash 2NL for about 6 months. Moved up to 4NL after a far too short winning streak and proceeded to lose steadily again. By the end of last year I was breaking even. Moved sites in Jan and started winning. Eventually moved up to 10NL in June. I'd say I've played around 200k hands. So I guess I'm still a poker baby!

How's it going?

For the short amount I've been playing I'll say it's going well.

I'm not really playing super much though.
I'm still on the fence on what gametype I should be playing the most.

To end on a positive note, I've read the SnG Book from Collin Moshman and I've won my first SnG!

Probably seems futile for many of you, but quite an achievement for me.

Colin Moshmans book on sit n goes is fantastic!

Congrats on the first win! No achievement is futile, if it means something to you then it is a good accomplishment, it doesn't matter what other people think. Keep up the good work!

I second that. There's absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating milestones and I'm glad you have something to celebrate. Good luck on your journey!
