so I've been playing poker abut 10 years now. started off playing online and then moved mainly to live games. running a league with my dad and brother for 5 years. played in vegas and many places across the uk Smile and now moved international ha but mainly playing the low stakes games as been more for fun and just the love of the game.

now I'm wanting to take it more serious...

i want to start from the beginning and work my way up to as high as possible.

I'm currently just travelling australia and the world for that matter Smile

i want to concentrate on the cash game side of things as my MTT game is as strong as a 6 year old girl. Smile

Yo this league sounds pretty interesting can you tell us more about it? Pub?
Posted 8 years ago
hey Jon sorry for late reply been busy crushing TonyBet haha Cheeky

so the league is called NPL999, its held at a police sports and social club and we was the first club outside of a casino to be allocated a NO LIMIT prize pool, as most pubs and clubs are only allowed a £250 limit Smile its took us a long time and a lot of effort but we got there Smile

We currently don't run it anymore as it was getting a bit to much for us to run with work and family commitments and unfortunately it has now become and really slow game with only 10-15 people weekly.

at its height we had 40-50 players weekly and used to run a `special` sunday tournament every 2 months. we had to cap them at 120 players as we just didn't have the equipment. these were really fun games with a different format each time choose by me,myself and brother each time. team shootout for points, single table shootouts, deep stacks and rebuts to name just a few Smile

real petty it never continued but maybe one day ill take it up again and get the poker in sheffield booming again Smile

Oh that sounds pretty sick!

And tell me more about TonyBet Smile

Sup VIP! I stumbled across this site via a google search and glad I decided to check it out. This is the best/most comprehensive free poker learning website I have ever seen, thanks to the people who run it for making it awesome!

I am a 24 year old US player that has not played since Black Friday, but have started to get back into the game again on Bovada 5nl 6 max cash game tables. I started playing online play money/freeroll games on FTP after watching Chris Moneymaker win the main event in 2003. Eventually ran a bankroll up to 100$ or so from nothing before I got board of poker and quit lol.

I started playing again and really learning the game by utilizing the 2+2 forum and a free deuces cracked membership a few years later, but then quit again thanks to Black Friday.

Now starting from the beginning once more and the game has evolved a lot since I last played lol. Thankfully I came across this site to up my level of play once again!

Welcome @Wiliest and thanks so much for the kind words! I think you are going to fit in really well here....sadly you are not alone when it comes to being from the US and finding it hard to play online! One tip of advice is to give Americas CardRoom a go - we trust them more than other US facing sites, payout quick and seem like the safest option. You also receive a lot more back such as 27% rakeback and some extra promos. You can view the deal and sign up Here.

What are the main differences you think in the game now compared to pre black friday?

What do you miss the most?
Posted 7 years ago*
Hmmm thanks for the tip John, ill have to check it out. As for the main differences, I would say things have become hyper-position based, not that position was nonexistent back then, but things have evolved a great deal in terms of opening ranges vs each specific seat, etc. Also semi-bluffing with draws seems standard now, but was just a thing you could do sometimes back then lol.

As for what I miss the most? Probably the huge player pools old Pokerstars and FTP had back in the day. Everything seems much more split up nowadays and ive heard Pokerstars kinda sucks now.

Edit: I just checked out that poker website, I'm not sure if you guys know anyone from over there, but they misspelled both "Louisiana" and "Nevada" on their welcome page, and as a site marketed towards American players..... its not a good first impression lol.

@Wiliest you miss big player pools? I would say they are still around especially on ACR and Stars.

Im chris being playing on and off for a few years . Im starting to think making money consistently at online poker is not really possible. Ive been playing super tight poker so tight at 1 cent 2 cent trying to figure out whats going to make me a winning player where as money goes up instead of down. I see players turned profits at tables have been sitting there for 5 hours at 1 cent 2 cent blinds and i think 5 dollars profit doesnt seem worth it. Any suggestion might be nice .

Poker may not be beatable for you right now - that is the honest truth but that does not mean poker will never be beatable for you. You say you play super tight but that may not be the correct strategy. Do you have set opening ranges for example?

My name is Matt, I'm 24 years old born and raised in West Yorkshire, England.

I play NLHE primarily, wet my feet from time to time in PLO. I prefer 6-max due to the faster play and action. I've been somewhat addicted to Zoom/Fast poker as of late on PokerStars.

I've been playing poker on and off for around 10 years. I made my first account on Partypoker when I was 15 and promptly bust my bankroll playing my entire bankroll (a measly £10) in a cash game. For the next few years I stuck to home games and when I hit 18 I played a few times a month in pubs and home games. I've always considered myself to have a good feel for the game even when I was a recreational player with no knowledge of any advanced concepts. In fact its only very recently that I've been enlightened to exactly how deep the strategy can go in NLHE and I'm very, very interested in learning more about this and using these concepts to improve my own game.

My ambition is to be a professional poker player. I would not be content with myself if I settled for a normal 9-5 life and I think there is more than enough money for me to comfortably claim a slice of the pie that is being served every day in casinos and online around the world. I know I have the intelligence and the aptitude to grasp complex strategies and advanced concepts that are fundamental for becoming a winning player. What I am struggling with is knowing where to start and what specific aspects of my game I need to improve or work on.

I've managed to rack up around 20,000 hands so far from mostly 2NL to the odd game of 10NL since April. I've also put some time away towards study, and I'm currently reading Poker Math that Matters and Let there be Range. 20k hands is a long way from being a sample size we can make really accurate assumptions with but I have managed to double my initial investment of £50 during that time.

I've come to PokerVIP because I know that if you are passionate about doing something and you surround yourself with people who share this passion then your collective experience improves. And in the case of poker, if our collective experience is our wallets or bankrolls then that can only be a good thing.

Oh and one last thing, yes I like fish sticks but I am not a gay fish. Also my girl ain't no hobbit.
