Rake Averages

Posted 7 years ago

I play Six Max Double or Nothing Turbos on Sky Poker and I was just wondering what you guys and girls would consider a normal rake percentage to be at various levels.

For example at

Sky Poker £0.30 Micro Stakes DoN Turbos: 33% Rake (Lose £0.30/Win:£0.20)

£0.60 Micro Stakes DoN Turbos: 33% Rake (Lose £0.60/Win:£0.40)

£1.15 Micro Stakes DoN Turbos (What I usually play): 26% Rake (Lose £1.15/Win:£0.85)

£2.25 Micro Stakes DoN Turbos: 22% Rake (Lose £2.25/Win £1.75)

Remember this is 6-max DoN not cash games where Rake is taken every pot. So how does this compare? Any ideas? High/low/average?

Rakes at those stakes are much higher and make the games unbeatable IMO

Once you move up to $5 minimum and get the 10% rake it's much better. I used to grind a ridiculous amount of DoN's

Yes, I am having a challenging time with them at the moment although my general strategy could probably do with some work. Once I become more consistent at this level I am probably going to move up in order to get a lower rake. I may even do it sooner if I decide the rake pay-off will compensate for my level of play.

How did you find the slightly higher levels such as $5? I noticed you said used to grind them. Did you not find them profitable in the end or just fancied moving on to something else?

I don't think there's that much difference tbh. I used to play probably 6-8 an hour between $5 and $10. Aimed for around $30 clear profit a day which built my roll up fairly nicely. I only stopped because I just prefer tournament play. Especially at the very lower stakes, they are difficult to beat, so I would say if you can, stick to the £1.15 and £2.25's as a minimum until you can move up.

Would be interesting to see your general strategy, I found that playing standard TAG ABC poker was best (Though it was some years ago for me).

Do you play on any other sites? On Microgaming, the rake is lower and if you get a deal with PokerVIP you also get 30% of your rake back. These are the ones on offer in the lobby at the minute, all 6 handed as well

Yes, the £1.15 level is what I am starting off with because you need to win 3/5 games instead out of 4/5 games to profit in the long-run which I can generally do because I have a reasonable developing strategy for it.

I tend to have a rather tight hand range so probably am more of a NIT. However, even with the Turbos, I have found a combination of styles to work better. I now mix NIT with TAG and also add LAG if get Deep-Stacked against rest of table. I prefer single-table as I play Turbos but as the games generally last less time it kind of evens out(ish) against regular DoNs but I find my concentration slips and I miss opportunities if I try and multi-table.

I am trying to build a bankroll on Sky to begin with but I am interested in joining other sites to get access to more Free-Rolls as I am doing quite well with them, usually ending up in top 25% on regular basis. Whether that will remain the same if I do multi-table Free-Rolls will be seen but at the end of the day they are free so you know.

I'll take a look at some other sites too. Thanks for that.

It might be worth adding to your role or changing game while your bankroll is lower. Rake at the micros is a killer and very hard to get out of.

My guess would be these games are incredibly difficult to beat that level of rake for any sort of reasonable return. I would take Killjoy's advice and try out the micro gaming sites which look a lot more reasonable.

Thank you for your responses. I think it's definitely worth a look at Microgaming and any other similar sites. Constantly trying to improve my game on the DoNs but proving a challenge to get anywhere significant so maybe aiming to use them as a points generator simply to get access to more MTTs.
