Tom Dwan - What Happened?

Posted 8 years ago

So I am curious what the general consensus is on what actually happened to Dwan and what you think he is doing right now.

People talk about him going broke, being backed, in debt, playing nosebleeds, leaving online as the live games are bigger and alsorts.

No one seems to know the exact truth behind any of it.

From multiple sources in the high stakes world I believe Tom is backed by a guy called Trincher and just grinds the nosebleeds 24/7 along with travelling to the super high rollers. To me this does not mean he is broke but that he now has a huge roll, can play in any game he likes and minimizes his risks.

However there is the Jungleman issue where he did not finish it and made a lot of excuses which rings some alarm bells. This is pretty bad if it is that clear cut!

What are your thoughts?

I read an article a few weeks ago about Dwan (can't remember where the article was) and regarding the jungleman issue it claimed that after years of Jungleman calling him out/ slagging him off, Dwan has agreed to commence the bet/challenge where they left off.
I personally think we desperately, as an Internet poker community, need more high roller games/ stars as that was what drew people to the game (in my opinion).
I can't think of any high stakes games that can come close to the full tilt ones.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me reagarding that but Man it was awesome hearing/watching the big games going down and the huge wins/losses.

I also think Dwan is not stupid.
He'll be making an absolute bucket load playing high stakes live games.
No way he's broke.

It just wont happen sadly unless it is rolled by Stars.

Dwan being out of heads up action for like 3 years now and also FTP not running the nose bleeds anymore leaves it up to Stars to put the show on basically.

I would bet against them just doing it between them and bet a good chunk against it ever happening.

Sad but true!

@Jon-PokerVIP with the merge of stars and full tilt fast approaching, do you think that stars will simply dissolve the full tilt brand?
I play on full tilt at the moment (following your advice) and although I can fire up 6 tables at 10nl pretty easily it's not exactly buzzing.
I can't see the point of stars keeping full tilt separate

Yeh I am pretty sure that is what's happening and maybe right away. You are right there is no point at all in keeping it and was probably the plan all along. With its huge decline this would have hurried them up a bit that is for sure.

Says who?

I have been told this by someone who plays there and heard it mentioned as an aside in an interview with an english guy (I forget his name but I think it was another Tom who is a former snooker champ) who was talking about it but didn't want to be talking about it when he was asked about some of the biggest pots (18-20 mil), who plays the games, and the playstyles of the players.

If there was going to be a movie made about 1 poker player, who would you choose?

I guess Doyle Brunson as it would show the full story and they could dramatize it really well! You know travelling round Texas playing dodgy games, being held at gun point, seeing people come and go, watching people like Ungar destroy themselves, cheating and then just what poker has become now. Shows one hell of a journey.

What about you?

I know @jongordon84 you asked @Jon-PokerVIP who he would want as a player, for what my opinion is worth I think Stuey Ungar:
• before poker - unbeatable gin rummy champion as a teenager backed by the mafia!
• lived the playboy lifestyle of a poker player and makes today's pros look like pussys!
• truly sick aggressive/fearless poker player and he won the main event the second time as a massive under dog ravaged by crack.
Overall, he was rude, obnoxious, confrontational but a genius player and totally fearless.
It would be an unbelievable film.

To be honest I haven't followed poker long enough to know who would make for an interesting movie, maybe Isildur1. I'm just holding out for Rounders 2.
