Chris Eubank Snr Amazing Boxing Cornering

Posted 8 years agoEdited 8 years ago

I didn't watch the fight but the video (below) went viral. It's a clip of Eubank telling his son not to punch Blackwell in the face to avoid injuring him. Right after the fight Blackwell collapsed and was put into an induced coma.

If Eubank didn't give them instructions who know what would have happened.

I think people can interpret it differently,Having watched it - not once did he say stop hitting him in the face because I'm worried for the opponent. He said we arent going to stop him by hitting him in the face, its body shots that will stop this fight. Completely different thing. Im a huge fan of eubank senior and junior, but I think 100% people are misinterpreting it.He just thought the best way of stopping Nick was through bodu shots.Yes he was gobsmacked it hadnt been stopped by Blackwells corner at that point but he never said stop hitting him in the face because we basically dont want to do damge.

Tx @Harvie for the u/l. Maybe I'm just a sheeple, but I read it the way most people do, which is that Sr. told his kid to lay up a bit. I think people who never watch combat sports would be amazed at the level of sportsmanship that is displayed.

Itsopinions at the end of the day,but the majority if your on twitter and social media actually dont think Eubank meant it in the way you think. From Pros.current boxers, trainers, media and more.

Yea I'm totally with SJLogic on this one, having watched the fight live, including the round chats,no way on gods green earth is he asking his son to stop hitting him due to worries over his safety.

He clearly states, the best way of stopping this fighter is by body shots,as the guy had a great chin and was taking the shots. They did want the fight stopping and Eubank Snr was seen banging on the apron to tell the ref to stop it,but that has nothing to do with the instructions in the corner.

Wether you watch combat sport or not as suggested above, its complete misinterpreation to suggest hes doing it for the good of the fighter.

That said, the trainer of Blackwell has a huge load to answer, how he sleeps at night i'll never know. Now he was seen saying your still in this, now weve got him etc etc,in round 8/9 when hes clearly 6 rounds down and taking a hiding. The fighters never going to quit but this trainer was appalling for not pulling his man out.

Some youtube vids can only be watched on YT itself. Must have something to do with $$$, I think the u/l'er gets to put that in the settings.

Both Sr and Jr said they deliberately stopped targeting the head: "Of his instructions to his son, he added: "Even in sparring, I tell Junior to stay away from the head because his punching is fast, powerful and dangerous. So most certainly I was saying this to protect the fighter. He had the fight won. This is a dangerous sport and we are real."

Eubank Jr. said he eased up on his opponent in the 10th round to avoid inflicting further damage on the 25-year-old, whose eye was severely swollen from the bout: "I’m glad the doctor stopped the fight because the referee wasn’t going to. I was playing. I’d won the fight, so I thought ‘let’s put on a little bit of a show because people are still watching.' I wasn’t throwing as many punches."

So you can call them liars if you like. You can also dismiss The Independent, Sky Sports, Irish Independent, and Examiner, all of which interpreted it the opposite of how you do. Plus there's the fact that Sr put a guy in a coma years back in similar circumstances, so ofc he had that in mind during this fight. But you have twitter and social media on your side, so good on ya.

I don't think it's as clear cut either way. Eubank has a clear and outspoken point of view on head injury in boxing for obvious reasons. He also says if it carries on "number 1, he's getting hurt" so it was in his mind. However I don't think he is saying don't hit the poor lamb. I think he is saying finish it because the ref won't and the best way will be body shots because Blackwell had taken big head shots and was still there.

But hey the world can't accept grey or nuance so let's make it an argument with right and wrong answers.

I actually think it's pretty straight-forward even from the linguistic angle if you choose to disregard the context (though I might be giving humanity too much credit). Eubank Snr expressed his puzzlement at the fact that ref hasn't stopped the fight yet and pointed out that opponent is going to get hurt if the fight continues. I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to combat sports but I think the health of the opponent was at least part of the reason for giving that speech.

Yeh hos words were something like "... But you're not going to take him out to the face because, one, he's going to get hurt...". He was basically saying don't let it go to a decision, but don't hit him in the head. It was sportsmanship while still wanting to win by stoppage.
