Should I Buy A Motobike Or Are They Too Dangerous?

Posted 8 years ago

Okay here's the situation.

A friend is selling a fully working motorbike in Thailand for £160!

Dirt cheap, his reason for selling is because he leaves next week and wants to sell it fast.

I would be using it everyday to travel around 1.5km to the gym and back.

Problem: Thailand's has some of the worst drivers in the world and motorbike crashes are a daily thing. My route from my place to the gym is kind of a straight road-ish.

At the moment I'm paying £1/day to get to the gym and back and I use a motorbike taxi. They are reckless and sometimes been drinking if I get one after 7pm.

Some of my friends have bikes and call me crazy for not having one, while others don't have one and think it's crazy to drive one.

Any riders here, what should I do asides from walk Laugh ?

I can definitely feel you. I live in Greece, a country which can surely compete for a place among the countries with the worst drivers in the whole world. Road accidents, especially those involving motorcycles are a daily thing here, especially where I live. I myself have owned a motorbike for 3 years. It's a very cheap and comfortable way to travel BUT it's indeed a lot more dangerous than a car. At first, when I didn't have a driving licence, I used to use my motorbike for all of my transportations (wouldn't do it if I had a choice). Now that I have a driving licence I use the car for most of them. I still use my motorbike but only for short distances and with extreme caution. I recommend you buy the motorbike. It's cheap and it can really help you in your situation. But always wear a helmet (this is the #1 rule but most people forget about it) and always be extremely cautious with it and use it only if you have to. If you have a driving licence and you can afford a car, choose the car for most of your transportations and use the motorbike only for short distances (and again, excercise EXTREME CAUTION). Nothing comes above your safety and your health.

@Isidoros thanks for the reply mate and welcome to the forum. Yeah I will for sure wear a helmet if i buy one, what about footwear? Apprently after your head, feet at the 2nd thing that gets damaged the most if you fall off a bike? Car is out of the question here, they are so expensive (all import cars have a 300% tax rate).

@jongordon84 it's 35c with 100% humidity, ain't nobody got time for that.

You're welcome! Well, concerning the footwear... I'm not wearing boots, just normal shoes. But I recommend you always wear a long sleeved shirt, trousers (not shorts) and gloves whenever you're on the motorbike. They can really save you from road rash (which is really painful, trust me) in case you fall off. 300% tax rate? Why so much?

I guess the answer is yes as you need to travel and will save you a ton of time and money (or will it? I hear jumping on the back of a moped taxi in Thailand is pretty much pennies?). Imagine they are safer drivers also.

Its a tough one as i hear so many horror stories so it all depends on you and if you would drink drive, be confident, understand their highway code and so on. Also if you have any experience or a license for one.

[@Jon-PokerVIP Here's the thing Jon you would think they are better drivers, but they drive as fast as possible from A to B so they can get the next person. They will dodge in front of buses and on at least 4 occasions I've saw a taxi driver drinking a beer waiting at the stand.

They also provide no helmet. That's why I want to get my own bike, I won't be doing more than 25mph because I don't mind it taking an extra 30 seconds if it means I don't end up killing myself, although I have no motorbike experience either.

I'd never drink and drive.

Might just download the Uber app and be done with it. Emo

I was going to type 'whats the worse that can happen' then i realised how dumb and obvious that was.

I would say to get one, break yourself in slowly and if it becomes obvious this aint a smart safe thing then just get rid of it.
