Just a some stuff I'd like to share and other ramblings

Posted 6 years ago

I have never done a Journey here and don't think this will be a journey per se. This kind of came about because I played about 50k hands on Stars Zoom 2NL and 5NL and wanted to share some of the results.

First some back story:

I started playing poker about 3 years ago. Relatively early on in my career, I found this site and used it to learn. I used to peruse the forums and strategy articles and watch pretty much all the videos. Over time, I got decent at the smallest of micros stakes and actually applied to be part of the PokerVIP staking team. I played on 10NL for them and did alright. Over the 4 to 6 months I was on the team, I definitely turned a profit, however, I never got good enough to move up to 20/25NL. PVIP terminated the staking team and brought on an outside group, ProStaker, to run that part of things for them. I never applied with them

I actually found a coaching for profits(CFP) group and applied and got accepted and have been with them for about a year now. I was stunned by how much stuff I didn't know that I didn't know. I have learned so much with them and still have more to go. I started with a bankroll ~$600 and i am a little over $3k now. I play 10 and 20nl sort of mixed stakes, mostly on Microgaming with Red Kings at the moment. I will probably ramble more about CFP's in the future. I think CFPs or staking deals are really good.

I should probably be further ahead but ran into some personal issues towards the middle to end of Sept which have hindered my ability to put in the volume needed at the higher stakes which kind of brought about this post and what I want to share.

The wife and I went on vacation to the USA for about 2 weeks in the middle of Sept, I live in Costa Rica even though I am American. When we returned, my wife had really bad abdominal pains and long story short she end up having a tumor attached to here female parts and all of it had to be removed. It was all benign, thank God,but for pretty much all of October and most of November my main job was taking care of her. She still is not 100%. So having the time and more importantly the focus needed to play @10/20NL was just not there.

At around the same time, I got an email from PokerStars that if I deposited $40 they would give me $15 instantly with no play requirements. So I decided to deposit there and figured I could do something like a mini bankroll challenge and just start out playing $2NL zoom. The reason I picked zoom is it is easy to just enter and leave a game, no mess no fuss, don't need to sit out next BB or make other players wait or search for tables, just open and play and if something comes up just sit out and come back when you are done and play some more, so it was super easy to just play here and there between other stuff that was going on. This worked well with me having to look after the wife as well as the hotel we manage here in Costa Rica.

So I think i started this Zoom challenge around the 7th of Sept. I only just passed the 50K hand mark, so you can see even with Zoom the volume is pretty meh. Considering I should be hitting 30K per month, at 10/20NL, for my CFP contract. Luckly the coach is awesome and I told him what was up my wife and I would need some time and we agreed we could just extend the contract as needed to account for lost months.

So I thought since I just hit ~50K hands I would share the graphs and the stats. Why am I doing this?? Well I think for a few reasons. I think everyone is going to assume it is a little bit of a brag and I suppose it is, but its not the main reason. I actually don't even think the win rates are that good. I think I could beat 2nl for more and 5nl I am not sure I only have 8k hands there so far and have been running pretty well the last few sessions. My main reason is I am hoping it will motivate some other guys here as well as help them in some way. I read a fair amount of the journeys here as well as other posts and HH and I see a lot of guys who hit rough patches and are struggling and feel like they are constantly getting crushed and are never going to get out of the micros. I was that guy too and still am that guy from time to time so I want to share this to show people that if you keep at it and work hard and put in volume and have some people you can bounce stuff off of and help you, that you can get good enough to beat your games and move up. I am super close to breaking out of the micros and into the small stakes and I felt like it would never happen, but now I know I will make it.

Now it is only 50K hands so not like we can assume that thiese are my true winrates or stats. Could just be run good. However its also important to note that I also used this Zoom Challenge thing to try new stuff out. I wanted to make sure I kept playing some form of poker while my wife was sick so I didn't lose my ability and digress. So I used it to try and improve. Due to the fact that stakes were smaller and I felt like I was free rolling a bit, I would try out different things. Bet sizes, 3bet ranges, bluffs etc.

Anyhow, I will get onto the graphs in the next post and then I will probably start posting some of the various stats from HM2 over the next couple of days. Not sure what else I will post beyond that. I guess we will see.

So the graphs!! First graph will be 2NL, which is 42637 hands, the next will be 5NL which is 8230 hands and then the last will be the 2 combined for 50867 hands.

When I first started I was just playing tight is right poker, not trying anything fancy, just ABC poker. You can see it in my red line and blue line making a big sideways V. You can see that at about the 20K to 30K hand mark I started to change that a bit and be more aggressive, started trying some different things and then you can see after 40K hands that it is even more so. Small samples but I think for sure you can see a play style change as the graph progresses.

Congratulations to the missus for the progress to her health and congrats to you for strength. We are having issues with both my missus and myself at the moment so I'm not 'voluming' as I could be either, but hey, it's nothing on your scale.
As for the poker, I would be interested in some of your bet sizing experiments. I tried so many I got all confused (see review vid for evidence! Blush )

I'm expecting to move to nl10 soon all being well, probably after New Year (insert fingers crossed emoji here).

Meanwhile, welcome and I'll offer my best Christmas cheer to you and particularly Mrs Fawltyfelix if I may. Drink

Thanks @Pwll Wishing you and the missus the best as well. Thanks for stopping by.

Now for some stats

This is just the basic overall stats by stakes. Shows hands/WR/VPIP/PFR. Win rates are reasonably good. I still think I should be bale to beat 2NLz for more. Mind you I was messing about with some stuff and I think there were some days where I was calling down more"GTO" or MDF and didn't need to be.

Nothing to special here. I think my cbet percentages are actually a bit low. I definitely could be cbetting more on the flop. Think I am getting to showdown slightly to often as well, but I think that is to be expected at 2NL. River call efficiency as actually quite good so I guess I am not calling down too light overall. Is only 42K hands though.

5NL Zoom Leak Buster Stats: This is only ~8k hands so not gonna be terribly significant, but I will post it anyhow

Not much to comment on here. Pretty similar to the 2NL stats. I think I might be folding a bit much in the BB in both cases, but I think its OK

Last is the positional Leak Buster stats. I didn't separate these out. No point really

I think it is super important for people to see the variance in these stats. There are posts I see where people are talking about there positional stats over a 50k or even 100k hands sample and getting hung up over the winrates. If you look at mine here you will see some huge variance cuz each position only has an 8600 hand sample. It is highly unlikely that I will maintain a -8.46 bb/100 from the BB. I think SB, EP, MP are reasonable. I doubt I will maintan that CO winrate and you can see from the BU I am only winning at 14.7 bb/100. I should be winning the most from the BU. Then if you look at the rest of my stats, they are all reasonable.

So last piece is the bankroll. I did a player audit and found that I deposited the first $40 on 7 Sept 2017 and got the $15 bonus:

Attached Image

Here is my current balance on Stars:

Attached Image

So I started with $40+$15+$55. I have won ~126 so the 2 together is $181, but I have $255 in my account. That is because the other thing I have been doing is having a go at some tournaments here and there. I have taken a little bit of a liking to the KO tourneys that stars has and will throw my hat into the $0.55, $1.10, and $2.20 Bounty Builder and other similar types of tourneys in the KO tab on the stars client. I like them cuz you only need a few bounties to get your buy in back. The level of play in these micro KOs is pretty bad so it isn't hard to do that. On some of them they have some pretty decent gaurantees so if you can luck box your way to a final table or close to it you can make some pretty decent money with KO's and prizes. I played one about 3 days ago and got to the final 3 tables out of about 6500 people. I think it was a $2.20 and I made about $20 in bounties and I think I cashed for about $20 as well, so not to bad, just playing a tourney on the side.

You can see it here on the player audit:

Wanted to post a crazy hand that I actually ended up being on the good side of just to show a little bit of the 5NLz run good that has been going on. Really crazy set up for the other 2 players. I could have raised the flop and probably should but I was kind of wanting to UT player to raise like he did. Its a bit risky as the board does have some draws on it, but I was not expecting this

'Coolers 'R' Us', don't ya just love it when finally, finally, it's your turn!? Dancing

Are you still on the CFP by the way or are you taking a break from it given current circumstances?
Posted 6 years ago
Still on it. Just agreed with Coach that I would extend the contract equal to months missed that I couldn't get volume in. Ill be playing 10NL Zoom soon anyhow so that can go towards my volume on the CFP.

I actually really think CFPs or Staking groups are pretty beneficial to people who are serious about becoming good at poker and are in the micros and want to move out of them. I would recommend that anyone who is eligible to @Prostaker on here that they apply. You can't beat having that group mentality of everyone working towards a similar goal but on an individual basis. Also, having the group and the coach to bounce things off of and hold you accountable as well.

It is so easy, when we are working on something on our own, to just put stuff off. Say you will do it tomorrow, etc. When you have a group that you know is watching you it makes it harder to do that. You kind of feel like they are counting on you, even though they aren't really, but it feels that way so you want to work harder and try and keep up.

I kind of preferred the CFP format, but I think either of them are good. Just need to find the right group, with the right coach, that fits your play style and personality.

Guess this is kind of turning into a journey. Although doubt I will keep this pace up with posts etc. Some results for today:

5NLz Stats for the day:

5NLz Graph for the day:

and the balance for the day:

Balance doesn't reflect the winnings because I played some tourneys as well. Didn't cash only got a couple bounties so down a bit today on the tourney front.

Also got in about an hour of play on 4 tables of €10NL and 1 table of €20NL on Microgaming. Profited over there so all and all a good day. I have been running bad over there. I think my balance was ~€700 a few days ago and starting today it was at €564. Ended the day over there at €616. So headed back in the right direction.

It has been one of those weeks over there where every bluff I run into top of range and anytime I make a strong made hand on the flop, by the time I get to the river it is no longer the best hand and sometimes too strong to fold, so end up paying people their money!! I know there are plenty of people here that can sympathize. Believe me it gets better. Just play your game and keep working on it

Hope you and the other half have had a good christmas!

Good luck with the coaching! Any goals for 2018?
Posted 6 years ago*
Hey @AshVIP Sorry I missed this. Thanks for the reply. I have not currently set any specific 2018 goals. Just some broad ones, like want to be playing 100/200nl by years end, but that isn't really a goal as it is not very specific and not very measurable. Need to sit down and come up with the action oriented steps that I am going to be taking on a day by day, week by week and month by month basis and the moving up in stakes will take care of themselves.

I haven't posted in a while, but as I said, this isn't going to be like a daily posting of journey, just some stuff here and there. I found out some kind of bad news this week. Seems my coach is all CFP'd out and the coaching group is going to be a lot different this year then in the past year I have been involved. In the past we had like 2-4 group coaching per week and you could usually do 1 one on one per week as well. Seems he is going to eliminate the group coachings as he has 2.5 years of recorded group coachings that we can watch that probably cover just about any topic you could imagine. He is giving everyone 2 options. You can continue with him at a significantly reduced percentage of profit share and he will still give you 1 coaching per month and you can pair up with another team member and get a team coaching or whatever about 1 a month, I think. Or you can calculate a buy out and be done with the entire thing. A lot more to everything but seems the year I chose to really give this poker thing a go and all the planning I have been doing to be able to really put 100% into it has not sort of missed the mark. Just goes to show that when you have an opportunity you need to just hit it hard. I unfortunately couldn't dedicate as much time as I wanted and didn't get as much out of it as I could have.

So I need to decide what to do. Limp along, go solo, find another CFP or staking deal. Anyhow. I hit $300 bankroll on my PS account and decided to move up to 10NLz. So I thought I would post the stats for 5nl and graphs. Played first 10NLz session yesterday and won half a buy in on 200 hands. That was after making a somewhat stupid jam in a 3b pot, but wasn't terrible. I probably could have gotten away with losing far less and then would hav emade more but all good.

Right after my last post I got hammered for a bit on 5nl. Some of it me some of it just run bad, so it took me some time to get it back together. I sort of picked $300 bucks @30 buy ins at 10nl as my move up point. Rather than take shots. Its slightly aggressive but this roll is not my entire roll. Its only about 15% of it. I would get to like $290 or $295 a few times then back down. I even hit $299 at one point and dropped back down to $280. So took me a bit to crack the $300. So we will see how it goes from here at 10nl.

I used to play Zoom on stars and I was never a winning player. I played 5nl and got crushed. So nice to see I have improved immensely and we wills see how far I can go.

Still playing 10/20nl on micro gaming. Was running bad for awhile over there. Think the last couple days might have snapped that. I think if i can make another ~€500, I might start taking shots at 50nl. Maybe another €1000 would be better.
Posted 6 years ago
How's it been going on the new stakes @fawltyfelix ? Did you take any 50 shots?
Posted 6 years ago
@AshVIP I wouldn't say I took actual shots, but threw up a couple tables that looked good the other day. They looked fishy enough to have a go and I ended up stacking someone, which saved my session. At the time I was running like crap on 10/20nl and was down about 3 buy ins, so that 1 50nl stack ended up getting me almost back to even.
