Twitch BR Challenge: $20 --> $2k

Posted 7 years ago

Howdy folks,

I've recently started into a BR building challenge over on my Twitch channel at www.twitch.tv/fergb12345 and I wanted to make thread here to keep a bit of a diary for how it goes. It is currently well under way and going well, I'm going to start posting regular updates after each session going forward.

I started out grinding the $2NL zoom games with my initial $20, things went well and within a few days we hit $50 where I decided to take some shots at $5NL. (Aggressive bankroll strategy was always the plan for this challenge)

I got absolutely dumpstered at 5NL and ended up back down to around $25. People in the chat were mocking me and suggesting I had to move back down to 2NL. I closed down my 5NL tables and my mouse was hovering over the 2NL games........suddenly I had a change of heart and decided to go big or go home and opened up 2 10NL games. The regular chat members got excited as they figured I was likely to go broke and then they could mock me for all of eternity saying that I busted my entire bankroll at the micros. Fortunately we went on a heater and after a few hours play we were sitting pretty at $110. ($108 of which was at the tables)

The next day brought more success and we rocked up to $150. which is where we are currently sitting on, the hard part is definitely over and we have a roll which is semi-adequate to be playing 10NL with, the plan is to start playing some $25 reg tables when we hit the $350 mark and take it onwards and upwards from there. See below for our current graph and I'll keep the thread updated after each session we play!

To be completely honest I find less and less time in my daily routine for twitch so the possibility of me tuning into your stream for any reasonable amount of time is slim to non. However, I think challenges like that are absolutely brilliant at bringing the streamer more popularity and promoting poker (the whole "zero to hero American dream idea" can be very intoxicating, plus it's important to prove from time to time that despite the naysayers and huge rake micros are in fact very beatable). I'm looking forward to future updates.

Didn't stream it but took a shot in the $215 Title Fight on Party Poker last night, I obviously couldn't buy into it fully using the challenge bankroll so I treated 10% of it as the challenge and the rest from my regular roll. Was chip leading when the bubble burst......min cashed lol. Roll is not sitting pretty at around $160 and I am extremely tired and cranky in work after staying up until 2am grinding out a couple hundred dollars profit.

Haha yeh i just heard this is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year or something?

So I was home from work today doing a tutorial all day, I jumped in for some poker a bit beforehand and here and there during the breaks. 1000 hands later and we've bumped up the BR by over $50, we're sitting pretty now:

BR - $214.77

I feel I've crossed the point where I have much of a chance of going broke so I think I'm odds on favourite to complete this challenge now. Obviosuly when we had under $100 at 10NL we had a relatively high risk of ruin so I think we're well past that stage now and I'm happy.

And some fun hands from the day:

Toughest spot of the day arose here - https://www.weaktight.com/h/58808202d39043a03a8b4654
I ended up making the fold on the river.

Is there anything more satisfying than binking when you're freerolling? (I know I wasn't freerolling entirely - But against the larger stack I was)

Nice work if you can get it! I'll be checking out your new series later, y'know, just to make sure and all that. Bowing Moving along nicely sir, moving along very nicely.

It's nice when you can casually boost your bankroll by more than 25% in a span of a single session. The risk of ruin is indeed much lower now and I'm sure you'll smash this challenge.

This has been a solid week, I started coaching a new student this evening and wound down afterwards with another solid winning session of around 3.5 buy ins over 715 hands.

Bankroll: $252.99

Out of 10 sessions of this BR challenge I've lost 2 and crushed all other days, fun times!

The highlight from todays session:

Will be on the stream grind bright and early tomorrow morning for some more action! Smile

Another awesome session, this time it was actually streamed! We were two table for over 5 hours and ended up reaching a $100 stack on one table, and a starting stack on the other Wink

2581 hands played, $23.80 profit and we also have $20 worth of stars coins we have yet to cash in.

Current BR: $276.79

We had cleared the $3000 mark but then we ran into a couple of awkward spots and this absolute disaster of a hand occurred. Against the obviously terrible agressive player I don't think we can ever do anything differently here but would be interested in other opinions.

Another day, another winning session. We started off the day with a casual $30 profit in 150 hands at 10NL. We continued grinding it out for a total of 1406 hands and racked up a total session of +$40.53 which we're happy with.

Current Bankroll - $317.32

We also have $27 in star coins saved up which we have yet to cash in so we're nearing our $350 goal before we start shot taking at 25NL reg tables!

That 1010 hand is interesting....

The question "why would he bet this much"

A: "probably wants me to fold"

solution: call

After a shaky start to our session today where we found ourselves -$40 we quickly rallied and went on a tear to end the session with a profit of over $30 and we still have some rakeback to cash in as well. Most importantly, we have hit out $350 milestone now and are ready to shot take 25NL on our next stream!

Current Bankroll - $350.05
Posted 7 years ago
That shot sounds a bit aggressive. I understand going for a higher risk/reward BM strategy in the context of a challenge but I'm curious how may buy-ins you're willing to invest in that shot. What's your stop-loss in case things go wrong?
Posted 7 years ago
In going to cash in the $20 in rake back we've currently got saved and then if things go wrong and we end up back down at $250 I'll move back down to 10NL. I know it's an aggressive shot but aggressive BRM has always been our plan for the challenge, since I have a small stop/loss I think that it's still a relatively risk free strat since 25BI at 10NL is plenty for me, it would take in incredible amount of run bad to drop that much given the edge I have in that pool.
