Winners never quit, and quitters never win - yet another wannabe

Posted 9 years ago

Hello everyone!

I've decided to share my poker journey here!

About me:

I'm 21 y/o, I live in one of the Baltic states, and I play poker full time for a few months now. I used to be a high level athlete - I competed for National team, made TOP 15 in World Junior Championships, but I quit last year because it was too big of a gamble to go all in there. I wasn't far from going Pro tho. I had already dropped out from Uni because I was away most of the time.

I decided to go full time on poker since here I don't need much to live like a baller - 2k/month is more than enough. Most people with degrees make 700-1k/month here.

Many people say that I'm bright minded and University would just be wasting my time. There is veery small chance of me doing 8-17 in shitty job.. It's just not for me.

Poker background:

Started in home games. I sucked.
Tried online. I sucked.
Played like 150k hands at NL5 w/ w/r of 14bb/100. I sucked.
Quit poker for a while.
Started again with 20$ on PS. Now I'm at NL50 on iPoker. I suck.

This is how 20$->NL25 shot looks like

Since moving to iPoker on December 2014.

Current situation:

I play poker as my only income. I play 30-40h/week. Goal for April was 50k hands. I don't play speed/zoom, since I find more value on regular tables. I only do 6max cash games, and 30% of my volume (and 65% of winnings) comes from HU. I have a roll for NL50, but I procrastinate a lot and do almost all of my volume in NL20 limit (both EUR and GBP tables).

Goals:
1) Play poker for living next 1-2 years and get up to at least NL400, and live a baller life style.
2) Save up monies and get into IT business.
3) Become a real Rock'n'rolla!

I don't expect anyone to read this.

Good luck!

Hi there!

A huge welcome to the forums and a very interesting story there. Well firstly, you think you suck? Wow, if you suck with those graphs then I am in trouble haha! No seriously, looks as though you have done very well for yourself and I always think it is important to keep a positive mental attitude. Maybe you were just joking? Laugh

Also you say you were an athlete.... what exactly did you do out of interest?

Best of luck to you on your journey, I hope you achieve all of your dreams! Sun

Hey, thanks for stepping in! Idon't think my post was negative, I'm just realistic. Yes, my RB comes from deal with pokerVIP. Not sure what do you mean with 'stuff'.

Hi again! We've spoken few times in the chat Smile
Well, in competitions there is always a winner. And a lot of losers. It doesn't matter if you came 2nd - you still lost. I believe it's a mistake to overestimate your own abilities in poker. Maybe WCGRider can tell that he's good, but he'd consider 99.999% of poker population as whales.

The fact alone that I know how to make money in poker doesn't mean I'm not terrible. Wink

My sport was orienteering - not very popular in most Europe, but it's kinda big in Scandinavian countries (I'm competing for a Swedish club myself) / Swiss. There isn't a lot of monies in play, so you must be veeery on top of the field to be able to make money. I was in top 1% world wide.. Last years I was running 100-200km/week, 1-3 trainings a day depending on time of the year.

I'm probably too ambitious person to achieve all of my dreams, but thanks a lot!

I'll update this with my last week's results.

I played only 1/2 week, so did terrible volume, only 21 hours. Money wise I made +410$ after RB, which put me at 1.3k$ for the month.

This is sick! Absolutely crushing! Keep it up! And a belated welcome to the forum Smile

Incredible opening post and i don't think you suck! Winning in poker is the opposite of sucky.

What differences do you find between Stars and iPoker? iPoker stop speed games at 200nl so i guess you just play there until you max out their levels then go for Stars 500nl maybe?

Hey! Thanks for stepping by! I don't play speed poker at all, only regular tables. I played on stars up to NL16, which was full of whales. NL25 there is probably tougher than NL20 on iPoker, idk actually. The games on iPoker are very good at evenings, but not much action in mornings / midday (I'm +2h UK time), so I'm considering adding another room to bumhunt.

The week has ended, so it's time for update.

This was on of my worst weeks this year, but I was expecting tough variance since I had been running hot lately. I found myself deep in a hole in the beginning of the week, broke even after Friday, and closed the week with minor profit from Saturday / Sunday.

13.7k hands, +127$ after rakeback. (I raked 310$, so lost monies before RB). 39h 18 min of play - this is probably my personal best!Cool

I made some monies after midnight as well, so now I'm standing at 1.45k profit for month with just 4 days to go. 2k profit is reachable if I hit a Hand of the week (promotion on Betfair) for some 250$ (I usually qualify for this).

I also decided to try out Europe-Bet. I've got funds ready, but I'm waiting for verification, which is taking surprisingly long time.

I'll post some fun hands / more thoughts tomorrow, since I'm too tired atm.

Very interesting first post. Do you think that the way you speak about your poker skill comes from the fact that you were a professional athlete and you know how small of a percentage of people gets to compete at the highest level? Or maybe you find negative statements motivating ("I suck therefore I need to get better")? In any case, I'd encourage you to revisit the wording. "I suck" is highly judgemental and can be harmful in the long run because of that. Consider something like "I need to constantly improve if I need to get to the highest level" or even "I'm bad" (still judgemental but less so).

Other than that good luck and have fun! I'll definitely read more.

The first one. My motivation usually comes from proving haters wrong. But thanks for stepping in!

And to add to my last week summary - it wasn't like I just ran bad. I played horrendous poker in some stretches as well. The thing is - I don't usually tilt, but when I'm running bad day after day, emotions are approaching the threshold, and at this stage after the first cooler of the session, part of my mind shuts down and I can't access my A game. I still play B game, but my B game is just break even (rakeback grinding). Probably everyone who plays poker has had this state, and I'm also aware of the reasoning why it happens, but I just haven't got rid of this part of tilt yet.

This is what I call a decent Monday!

Europebet: Yeh i have seen the thread where people are getting a little antsy and it does seem like a pain no doubt. I can confirm tho Tom is working hard with them to make this all way easier. #keepthefaith.

Sick amount of grind there man.....it actually inspires me and i am thinking this weekend i might try to do something like that :). Even if the cash reward was not monsterous it was still profit and i dunno sometimes you get a good feeling from poker which isnt directly related to making tons of cash. Keep at it!

Its 4:45 AM here and I just finished my 2nd session of the day - 8h long one (longest ever).

This is not NL200, but NL20!!! table. 100bb max buy-in. I won 2 biggest pots of my life there. Will post 1 of them tomorrow since too tired.

I also got my Europe-Bet client going - dropped 6 stacks like a boss! (~120 eur). I ran quite below EV + 2 coolers. But the site is insane, it's not even poker. I mean I iso limper w Q10o, flop 1052ss, cbet/call, turn 7s, fish donks AI (short stacked ofc) and shows a flush. I also ran in many spots when 20bb fish limp/called hands like A10/AJ, and flop came 10 or J high with me having KJ/K10. Sucks, but that's poker. I'm also a huge fish without my HUD and notes.

Anyway, even tho I dropped so much at EB, I made 100+ eur profit for day, so I'm fine with it.

Good night!

Milf have you any clue how to get PT4 working with Europe Bet or is it just not compatible? Think I was at a few of your tables last night, on severe tilt :D. The standard on the site is baffling.
Posted 9 years ago
No idea about PT4 - I use HM2 myself. You probably took my monies and then tilted away Laugh I haven't payed any attention to screen names, as they all look the same there.
BTW - what is the best tactics to play on that site? Playing 12/10/3 might be super profitable, idk.

Maybe not exactly 12/10/3 but if sound like you need to rely on your equity and forget about fold equity in most cases. Good old tight is right should work wonders vs. players that are addicted to calling. You'll probably make most of your money from value betting thin.

Yeah, probably solid ABC is the way to go. Back to NL2/NL5 thinking. Not easy to do since I'm used to playing decent opponents. Will try this strategy today, hopefully I won't drop any more BI's.

For some reason the hands cannot be converted. Happens sometimes, but idk why.

Hand 1. This might look veeery awkward play by me, but I have 11k hand history on villain, he's drunk and clicking buttons. River completed some part of his range, but there's still a lot of air.

Hero MP 450bb
Villain CO 800bb

Pre: Hero KdKh
Hero opens 3bb, villain raise to 5bb, hero re-raise 15bb, villain calls.

Flop: (6.30 eur) Qc9s8s
Hero bets 3.78, villain calls.

Turn: (13.86 eur) 2h
Hero checks, villain pots, hero calls.

River: (41.58 eur) 4s
Hero checks, villain bets 42.40, hero calls.

Villain shows Kc10h and hero wins 126 eur pot.
--------------------------------------
Hand 2. The same villain.

Hero BTN 770 bb
Villain SB 380 bb

Pre: Hero 5d5h opens 2bb, villain raise 10bb, hero calls.

Flop: (4.2 eur) 5s4h2h
Villain pots, hero calls.

Turn: (12.60 eur) 9c
Villain pots, hero calls.

River (37.80 eur) Ks
Villain shoves 58.05 eur, hero calls.

Villain shows Ah8h. Hero wins 152 eur pot.
