5NL - AJ (BB) 3Bet spot

Posted 6 years ago

Anon table. We 3Bet from the BB and face this flop. I didn't cbet flop because I didn't want to bloat the size of the pot. I felt like the turn card made the board more dangerous. On the river I went for thin value.

Any thoughts on how this was played?

Prefer to have this combo in my calling range from the BB and 3b the suited combos otherwise we really dont have any strong Ax when defending BB.

As played I think cb is mandatory with this type of equity, we can get villain off better hands on the flop turn or river even if we brick, Tx maybe even some KJ KQ combos depending on they're blocker effect, AQ no heart has to muck for example.

AJo is always a close decision... against a fold happy opponent I 3bet BvsBB, against stickier ones I just call...

when you 3bet you should bet this flop. Villain should not check raise you in this spot too often. When betting flop you should also bet turn. On boards like this you fold out most passive opponents (AK with no heart eg.).

depending on you opponent you could then even opt for shovin the river... just think about what better hands he sould have here? AxQh had to fold on the turn. there are only 4 KxQh combos he might have... everything else should not arrive at the river. an overbet might lead Villain to think you are bluffing and they will use their weaker flushes (87-T9) or AK as a bluffcatcher

The pre-flop decision is borderline. I can see AJo being a solid part of both your calling and 3betting range depending on your opponent and playstyle. Ev of the aggressive option shouldn't be that much different in most cases.

As played, you have plenty of equity and you can fold out some better hands like 88-99 so I'd just go ahead and cbet. As played I'd also go for thin value on the river.
