I'm a mid-high stakes PLO player and coach - AMA!

Posted 7 years ago

Hey everyone, I'm Sean and I'm a PLO coach here at PokerVIP - you can check out my video reviews here.

I also do 1 on 1 coaching primarily through my site, www.plomastery.com, where you can also get content created specifically for NL players looking to learn PLO and transition over to the 4 card life.

I've been a professional poker player for almost 8 years now, spent a good chunk of my college years skipping class to play NLHE online, had stretches playing a good bit of $25/$50+ at different points of my career, and at other points had to rebuild and wonder if it's worth it.

I'll answer anything and everything you ever wanted to know about PLO, my experiences re-locating and traveling the world, learning languages, fighting in foreign countries, or anything else you want to know. This should be fun. Ask me anything!

I have one question. Why PLO? If you could explain more in depth why PLO over NLHE? Maybe also some pros & cons
Thanks! Smile

Thanks for kicking things off @DinBaba

I switched over from NLHE cash back in 2008, but if you mean why PLO over NLHE now, it's because there's more room to improve compared to NL which is way closer to being solved than PLO is. So..

Pros:
- bigger potential winrates, 10bb/100 is definitely doable with game selection at low to mid stakes
- 2x the cards, 4x the fun. proven maths formula
- less people using seating scripts
- fun players in NL usually have some clue of how to play, but in PLO it's not always the case

Cons:
- Variance like a mufucka. You can definitely run 100bi under EV in a year.
- Need a much bigger roll to play the same stakes compared to NL
- Fewer games overall, but still plenty of action across sites up to mid stakes to 7 table

Cool love these things!

So starting with the Ez ones.

Where are you from and where do you live now?
Where do you play today and at what stakes?

The hard one Smile

If you could only say one sentence that should help a NL player transition from NL to PLO, what would that be?

Where are you from and where do you live now?
- I grew up in California, Trumptopia USA and now I'm living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Where do you play today and at what stakes?
- I'm on most of the major sites (PS, 888, Party, WPN, Microgaming) playing everything from 2/4 - 10/20.

If you could only say one sentence that should help a NL player transition from NL to PLO, what would that be?
- Hard question indeed Smile I'll give it my best shot...

When you're starting out, mark every hand you play where you're unsure of the equity you have or an opponent has with their range on a board and use Pro Poker Tools to figure out if those are spots you should be folding or continuing.

Prostaker: Which site do you get most action at 5-10+?

Pokerstars, followed by WPN, then Party.

Hi man. Great videos, sadly i dont play those level yet Wink What sites would you recommend to micro stakes players, PLO5 to PLO25? Have you played on eurosites like ipoker or mpn, what is the softer network you have find? Thanks!

Glad you liked the videos @skrumm From what I've seen and heard, Unibet and Microgaming are your best options. Both have very reasonable rake structures at micros and enough tables so you can grind and get in volume. If you happen to be Swedish, Svenskaspel might be the best of all the options.
