NL2 Zoom KK, thin value on the river???

Posted 7 years ago

Hi Folks,

Recently i have gone back to basics, micro stakes with a small bank roll as I attempt to rebuild my game and lose all my bad habits for good.

One area where I think I lose a little bit is that I have is a high tendency to check back the river and not go for thin value often enough. Here is one hand I did this.

At the micro's is it OK to go for thin value here? I get into the mindset of if I get raised I am beat, so I tend to not risk a final bet.

Should probably add that I am assuming villain doesn't raise with anything but a made flush. I'm discounting AA, as he 4 bets me pre. If he has a set i think he is more aggressive earlier (unless its a rivered set).

Does he ever call with AQ, AJ or TT or something like that that I can get value from?

Pre: I like you're sizing here.

Flop: I would be betting larger here for sure. If villain has a hand they can call with, they will likely be calling any reasonable sizing. I would be going areoun 40c.

Turn: Same as above, I think your sizing is too small. We still want to keep Jx in the mix so I wouldn't be going huge, but definitely larger than you have gone, around 50-55c.

River: One of the the biggest revelations that hit me when I started winning at poker was that it's OK to bet fold rivers! It's very difficult to see how we are beat here. By not betting we are leaving a ton of value out there, maybe not in this exact instance given villains holdings but in general we can definitely get called by a lot of worse hands here.

Yeah, the 5 is not even that bad of a card. Ok it completes the flushes but it also counterfits all 2pair combos. So bet smallish and play bet/fold. It's thin enough where I doubt we are giving up a lot with a check though, so whatever.

Pre is good.

On the flop I'm going bigger because of who we're playing against. He's not full stacked so is likely to be bad.

Same on the turn. No need to not go for more value.

On the river we're now beating J8 and QJ so again go for more value. Bet/fold is your best friend when up against passive players who call too much but rarely bluff.
