Everything looks standard until the river.

I think I would be more inclined to bet small on the river and fold to a raise. As played I think it's a really sticky spot. Hands I expect him to bluff with are 76s and 9x, but that's not so many combos out of his entire range for getting to this point. JTs I would expect to check behind.

It doesn't look like he's dying for you to fold either with the sizing, so I would fold.

The question is how wide we expect to get called if we bet small for value ourself?

I'd typically go for a small bet fold or check-fold depending on player type. Quite a few draws hit on the turn and river so don't love check-calling.

4-way I'd lean towards a small bet/fold.

Sadly this is always a check fold! Bet/folding is really bad as we just get exploited

I find this statement both erroneous and confusing. Although it is correct it is a check/fold, i don't think you quiet understand why it is. And bet/folding because we get exploited is not a good enough reason to completely disregard such a play. Not all players will exploit you in this spot, also this spot does not come up that often that would be exploited. From there prospective, by betting small, you could be inducing them to shove. Also, it does not take into consideration that we might size a smaller sizing with weaker flushes, and other strong value hands, and use a big sizing for our strongest flushes, and air.
