Effective stack

When two players don't have the same number of chips in front of them, the term effective stack is used to denote the actual amount any of the players can actually win.

For example, if Player A has 6,000 chips and Player B has 3,500, the effective stack is 3,500, as this is the most any of the two stands to either win or lose in the hand.
