Technology & Poker

Casino gaming has become so dependent on the rise of technology over the last quarter of a century, and while it has created an entirely new dynamic within the casino gaming industry, there are plenty of people, be they players or those who work in the industry, who believe that it is important to strike a balance.

Nobody can deny that poker has benefitted on a global scale due to the rise of technology, but as is the case with many other forms of gaming, it is crucial not to lose sight of what made it such a popular casino game in the first place.

Pioneering Tech Integration

It’s easy to look at the current fabric of the casino gaming industry and marvel at the way technology has revolutionized it. For poker players, though, it can be a complex topic to broach.

Conventional games are unique, and they stand out from the rest of the market. Those who can play poker well know how to leverage strategy, technique, and read their opponents – all of which weigh the game in their favor, especially when it involves esteemed players facing off against those with less experience.

Online poker was not the first venture that combined the growing world of technology with the casino classic. The rise of online video poker casino gaming has built on the foundations that video poker first laid in the 1970s.

Back then, many people were skeptical of the potential of a solitary version of the game, where players would face off against a computer, and not have to rely on some of the more conventional skills and tricks that defined the game up until that point. However, the resounding success of video poker, then later online poker, and online video poker, showed just how integral technology can be in galvanizing the market.

Technology As A Resource

It’s not just poker design that has explored uncharted territory thanks to innovative technology; it's also opened several doors for those looking to learn more about how the game works.

In the days before the internet, you would have to go looking for poker books, strategies, or enter games yourself to get the experience needed to see how these games truly worked.

Technology has enabled you to do it without leaving your home. Obviously, with such a seismic change, the fabric of the game has changed fundamentally, too.

There’s no shortage of coaching videos that dive into every facet of how poker works, ranging from dealing with aggressive players to deep dives into why only a small percentage of poker players can turn a profit.

YouTube has become such a vital source for those in the poker community, and as you can see in the link below, we’re talking about all forms of poker, ranging from the niche to some of the most dominant forms there are.

Not Losing Sight Of The Fundamentals

We’ve seen how technology has transformed industries both for the better and the worse. Those poker players who first learned how the game works in a conventional setting and prefer the conventional elements of bluffing and physical cards often acknowledge that there is a space in the industry for online poker.

We have seen how many of the top names at the World Series of Poker have combined their conventional gaming prowess with social media to appeal to a larger audience. Daniel Negreanu is somebody who sits at the top of the poker ladder and has done it for over two decades, all while perfecting his brand across multiple platforms.

Not only does he keep himself sharp by participating in a string of the most lucrative conventional tournaments, but he also appears often in contemporary media to modernize his brand and become more visible to an audience that prefers online versions of the game over the more traditional.

However, the rise of AI in poker is a more pressing issue. We have seen how AI is making enormous advances in almost every field. Recently, it has bested some of the top table tennis players on the planet, and while it has been able to match the elite of the poker world for close to a decade now, we do not want to lose sight of the game’s essence and what makes it so fun to play.

Technology has made the game more accessible, but we do not want it to result in a world where the game is fully automated, either. There has to be a balance.

Keeping Poker Well Balanced

It is a delicate balancing act when we’re talking about technology and poker. It has created significant opportunities within the sector, but it has also brought about remarkable, fundamental changes that have shifted the dial forever.

By kowtowing to these changes in pursuit of profit, the poker industry will face a fork in the road, likely driven by the dramatic developments in AI since 2022. Ultimately, though, as we witnessed the rise of video poker and online poker, the health of the industry will be determined by the scope of the market.

So long as both conventional tournaments and online platforms command millions of daily users, there will always be a market for poker that explores technology without completely changing on account of convenience. There’s plenty to be optimistic about as we move forward.
